The Happiness Advantage: How Happiness Fuels Success

Have you ever taken a second and wondered if the true secret to success is really about working harder, longer, or faster? What if I told you it’s as simple as being happy? Shawn Anchor’s transformative book, The Happiness Advantage, turns conventional wisdom upside down, presenting a compelling case that happiness is not the result of success, but rather its precursor.

Flipping the Formula

The traditional way of thinking posits that if we work hard, achieve our goals, and find success, then we will be happy. Anchor, however, challenges this mindset, suggesting that this “success-first” approach often leads to burnout and a perpetual chase for the next milestone. Instead, he argues that happiness fuels success, not the other way around.

This shift in perspective is supported by research in positive psychology, which shows that individuals who cultivate happiness experience enhanced productivity, creativity, and resilience. Achor’s “happiness advantage” concept reveals that a positive mindset is a powerful tool for achieving both personal and professional goals.

The Science Behind the Smile

Achor delves into neuroscience and positive psychology to explain why happiness is so effective at driving success. Positive emotions release dopamine and serotonin, chemicals that enhance learning, memory, and problem-solving skills. When individuals are in a positive state, they’re better equipped to tackle challenges, collaborate with others, and think creatively.

Organizations that foster happiness often see measurable improvements in performance. For example, studies cited in the book demonstrate that happy employees are more engaged, exhibit greater loyalty, and take fewer sick days. This is why companies, such as Google and Zappos, invest heavily in creating a positive workplace culture.

Actionable Strategies for Cultivating Happiness

Not only does this book do a great job explaining how happiness leads to success, it also shares actionable strategies on how to cultivate happiness. Here are a few highlights:

  1. Acts of Kindness: Engaging in small acts of generosity boosts your mood and creates a ripple effect, spreading positivity to those around you.

  2. Gratitude Journaling: Write down 3 things you’re grateful for every day. My suggestion is try starting your day by doing this. This simple exercise shifts your focus toward what’s going well in your life. The things you think about, grow.

  3. The Tetris Effect: Train your brain to focus on the positive by consciously scanning for good things each day. This rewires your brain to recognize opportunities and solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

  4. The 20-second rule: This is a technique for forming new habits by making it easier or breaking a bad habit by making it harder. For example, storing your shoes beside the doorway rather than in the closet can save you 20 seconds. This reduces the steps between wanting to do it and actually doing it, making it easier to achieve. On the other hand, you could add 20 seconds of resistance to a habit to break it. For example, placing a bag of chips at the back of the pantry vs, on the counter of your kitchen.

  5. Social Investment: Build and maintain strong social connections. Achor emphasizes that relationships are the greatest predictors of happiness and long-term success.

Happiness as a Competitive Edge

In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, the happiness advantage offers a refreshing and effective strategy for achieving success. Whether you’re looking for a new approach in your profession or just someone striving for personal growth, adopting a happiness-first mindset can transform your approach to work and life.

As Achor persuasively demonstrates, happiness is not a reward reserved for the end of the road. Rather, it’s a way of life that can propel us forward, allowing us to achieve our full potential. By embracing the principles in the Happiness Advantage, we can redefine the route to success and lead more fulfilling, impactful lives.

Not only will happiness help you succeed, but you will create an enjoyable journey along your path. Life’s about the journey so start investing in your happiness today. The returns will be remarkable.
